Ion Chicu: Ukraine is ready to offer gas to Moldova after January 1, 2020 in case of emergency


Prime Minister Ion Chicu organized an operational cabinet meeting summarize the visit to Kiev. One of the main problems was the supply of gas to the Republic of Moldova, MOLDPRES reports.

We have agreed on all aspects related to the gas supply to the Republic of Moldova through alternative routes. After yesterday’s discussion, we remain optimistic that Russia and Ukraine will reach an agreement on gas transit, and we will receive gas along the traditional route,” the Prime Minister said.

Still, reserve scenarios were discussed, about which we repeatedly spoke. And it was necessary to sign several contracts. We have full support from Ukraine to complete this process in the shortest possible time,” Ion Chicu emphasized. “Ukraine has assured us that it will offer natural gas and electricity after January 1, in case any of these scenarios fail, in an emergency mode.

I am sure, however, that we will not get to this scenario, but I want to say with satisfaction that Ukraine is ready to provide assistance,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

The head of the Cabinet announced that the meeting of the Moldovan-Ukrainian intergovernmental commission would be held in Chisinau in March 2020. “At the same time, we have a consent of the Ukrainian Prime Minister to visit Chisinau,” he added.

The Prime Minister said that topics of interest to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, included the issue of property, environment of the Dniester River, Novodnistrovskaya Hydroelectric Power Station, and would be discussed to determine compromise solutions, demarcate the state border in Giurgiulesti, in other sections in the north and south, as well as in the Transnistrian area.
