Moldova Celebrates the 74th Anniversary of Liberation from Fascists
Today, on August 24, Moldova marks the 74th anniversary of the liberation from the fascist invaders. On the occasion of the end of the Iasi-Kishinev operation anniversary, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, sent a congratulatory message to all citizens of the republic.

"I cordially congratulate all citizens of our country living in the territory of the Republic of Moldova, as well as abroad with the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Moldova from the fascist invaders.

On this day, August 24, 1944, Soviet troops victoriously completed the Iasi-Chisinau operation and finally liberated the territory of the Moldavian SSR.

The three-year period of the fascist occupation of our Republic, accompanied by terror, robbery and famine ended. During this time, Moldova lost hundreds of thousands of people, almost a quarter of its pre-war population. Over 50 thousand Moldovans were taken to forced labor. About 200 thousand inhabitants of our republic perished from hunger and disease.

Defeat of the fascist group in the territory of Moldova was of invaluable strategic importance. Victorious completion of the operation, called by the historians "Iasi-Chisinau Cannes", made it possible to strike at the Hitler’s coalition and the Victory in the Great Patriotic War closer.

The people of Moldova are one of the victorious nations in that war. 300 thousand natives of Moldova fought on different fronts in the Red Army, more than 60 thousand of them died on the battlefields, and 18 of our countrymen became Heroes of the Soviet Union. We will not allow anyone to rewrite history and declare our people "losers", as some irresponsible politicians still try to do.

The day of August 24 will be marked by a number of major events in the Republic of Moldova. Thus, the celebration of heroes of the Iasi-Chisinau operation will take place at the Chisinau Memorial "Eternity", as well as at the Sharpeni memorial complex.

Also there will be a number of scientific and practical conferences, book presentations, exhibitions in Chisinau and other regions of the country. In addition, the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Moldova from the fascist occupation will be marked by the round tables and festivities by Moldovan diasporas in Moscow and other regions of the Russian Federation where our fellow citizens live.

Our people will always honor the memory of those who planned and carried out the Iasi-Chisinau operation who at the cost of their lives liberated our country and provided a peaceful sky for generations. Eternal glory to the heroes-winners!"- the message says.
