President met OSCE Special Representative Thomas Meyer-Harting

The Head of State met with the Special Representative of the Albanian Chairmanship of the OSCE, Thomas Meyer-Harting, a well-known Austrian statesman and diplomat, the former head of the European External Relations Service, who arrived in our country on a working visit.

The President expressed gratitude for the attention that Albania pays to the Republic of Moldova as part of its Chairmanship in the OSCE, and noted with particular satisfaction the decision of the Albanian leadership to appoint a Special Representative for the Republic of Moldova. Igor Dodon confirmed his readiness to build very close relations with the Albanian Chairmanship of the OSCE.

Meanwhile, during the discussion, the parties exchanged views on a wide range of issues regarding the current state of affairs on the Transnistrian settlement.

In this context, I expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved in 2017-2019 on the implementation of the agreements of the Berlin Plus package. The Moldovan side confirms the need to implement confidence-building measures between the banks of the Dniester and will make the necessary efforts to implement all the provisions set forth in the Joint Statement of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OSCE in 2016-2019.

At the same time, I expressed concern about the observance of human rights and freedoms in Transnistria and the possible risks that may arise during 2020, given the holding of the planned presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova. The election campaign can seriously complicate the possibility of conducting any consultations with representatives of Transnistria.

In conclusion, I expressed interest in enhancing dialogue at various levels on confidence-building measures in the field of security and development of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Mr. Mayer-Harting is well acquainted with the topic of the Transnistrian settlement, since he was the representative of the European Union in the 5 + 2 negotiation format in 2017-2018
,” said Igor Dodon.
