President discussed important issues with OSCE Secretary General


Moldovan President Igor Dodon met with OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger, who is visiting our country.

During the conversation, the parties considered a number of issues related to the internal process of strengthening democracy, resolving the Transnistrian problem, as well as OSCE assistance in the removal and disposal of the Russian ammunition from Transnistria.

Igor Dodon stressed that the OSCE as a mediator was a key partner of the Republic of Moldova in solving the Transnistrian problem, as well as in providing the necessary assistance and expertise in matters relating to human rights, rule of law and civil society.

I highly appreciated commitment of Slovakia, which is chairing the OSCE this year, to prioritize prevention, mediation and reducing tensions in the zones of “frozen conflicts”, and expressed gratitude for the readiness to organize a meeting in the 5 + 2 format of negotiation process in October. We spoke about the policy of “small steps” and the progress achieved from the package of “8 points” proposed by the presidential administration in 2017, and the Berlin Protocol, signed in 2016.

The fact that since September 16, Moldovan officials can freely visit the Transnistrian region with private goals, can be considered as a significant success in this area
,” he said.

The Head of State also assessed the initiative of the Russian side to start the process of disposing of ammunition in Colbasna and stressed that this initiative was a good step towards a political settlement of the Transnistrian issue. In this regard, Igor Dodon expressed the hope that under the auspices of the OSCE this process would be implemented in a short time and with maximum efficiency.
